Statistics Around Cyberattacks

The topic of cybersecurity in today´s world is one that has come to prominence recently. For example, in our blog 6 TIPS TO SECURE ONLINE CONNECTION, we have described the basic rules of secure online connection, thus how to defend against cyberattacks. But what is the probability of a cyberattack? “It can´t happen to me. It can´t happen to my business”, everybody thinks. So let´s look at some statistics of cyberattacks that are sometimes really hardline.

Basic Facts

Cyberattacks are on the rise. One in three organizations had a reported cybersecurity incident last year. Additionally, nearly two-thirds experienced at least one attack that originated from outside their network perimeter. This fact indicates increasing sophistication across cybercriminals as they transform into ‘informational criminals’ who focus more heavily on data theft than traditional motives like money or glory.

Cyberattacks are on the rise

In 2018 there were almost 3 million cyberattacks per day worldwide, with 90 per cent targeting organizations in developed countries like America or Japan - often businesses involved some online communication such as emails (44%), web browsing sessions (38%), credit card transactions (12%). The most vulnerable sectors? Financial services followed by manufacturing and public administration have all seen increases over recent years.

Companies that hold sensitive data or personally identifiable information are common targets for hackers. Types of businesses or organizations that are the most vulnerable to cyberattacks include:

Cybercrime for Small and Medium Businesses

Cyber attacks on all businesses, particularly small to medium-sized businesses, are becoming more frequent, targeted, and complex. According to Accenture’s Cost of Cybercrime Study, 43% of cyberattacks are aimed at small businesses, but only 14% are prepared to defend themselves.

Not only does a cyberattack disrupt normal operations, but it may cause damage to important IT assets and infrastructure that can be impossible to recover from without the budget or resources to do so.

Small businesses are struggling to defend themselves because of this. According to Ponemon Institute´s State of Cybersecurity Report, small to medium-sized businesses around the globe report recent experiences with cyber attacks:
